Congratulations, Charlie Rietschel!
After more than 4,000 votes, the American Birkebeiner is thrilled to announce that the winner of the Birkie 2012 T-Shirt Design Contest is Charlie Rietschel of Andover, MN.
We received some amazing entries in our third annual Birkie T-shirt design competition. From all the designs submitted, the choices were narrowed down to the top three. Then we asked our Birkie participants, friends, family, and the skiing community to vote for their favorite. The voting took place for one week, from September 24-31. Charlie's design immediately stood out as the clear winner and maintained its lead for the entire week of voting.
Charlie will receive a new pair of Fischer RCS skis--his choice of skate or classic. New Moon Ski & Bike of Hayward, WI, is donating both the bindings for the skis and the mounting. He also receives a complimentary race registration to the 2012 or 2013 American Birkebeiner and a VIP parking pass to the race start.
Here is what Charlie had to say about his design and what inspired him:
"I have skied the Classic Birkie two times, and this winter will be my third. I actually came up with this design for last year's T-shirt contest after I skied my first Birkie, but I missed the deadline to submit it, so I had to wait until this year.
"I wanted to make sure I stuck with the theme 'Live the Birkie,' so I wanted to have the symbols of the Birkie in the design. What better way then to have the Birkie Warriors. My goal was to make the shadows represent the spirit of the Birkie warrier in all of us who ski the race, be it Classic or Freestyle.
"I learned about the T-shirt contest last year from the Birkie web site. I have done designs before, but as more of a hobby. I do coach Nordic skiing at Champlin Park High School, so I have come up with designs for the team. This is the first time I have ever entered a contest."
