Elite Skier Rules & Information

The American Birkebeiner is run according to the rules and regulations of the FIS and any special requirements stated in the entry form, Birch Scroll and participant race instructions. Offenses against any of these rules may lead to disqualification for current or future events and the forfeiture of any and all awards.

FIS Commercial Marking Regulations - Rule #207

NOTE: Elite Wave Skiers will be monitored for Commercial Marking Regulation compliance.  To be eligible for the podium and prize money, uniforms must be in compliance with the FIS Commercial Marking Regulations Policy.

  • Hat/Headband Producer – 15 sq. centimeters each side maximum. (Commercial emblem must be over skiers ears-both sides of hat permissible).
  • Headgear Sponsor – 50 sq. centimeters maximum on front of hat. (For USSA – must have National emblem on front, limited to elite skiers in the Red/White Group, skiers must have made written application and have approval from USSA prior to competition).
  • Glove Producer – 15 sq. centimeters total maximum. (Art/logo/lettering may be divided into two parts).
  • Competition Suit – maximum of four markings, none greater than 100 sq. centimeters. Maximum area of markings may not exceed 300 sq. centimeters.
  • Your clothing will be monitored by officials at entry into elite wave start area.
  • Uniforms of the top 6 male and female finishers will also be checked for compliance at the finish line.


Drug Testing

Top Birkie men and women finishers may be tested for banned substances by the US Anti-Doping Agency staff immediately after they finish.

The prize money amounts listed above are in Euros. The actual prize money for the event will be distributed in U.S. Dollars based on the conversion rate as of February 25th.

The American Birkebeiner will be a part of the 2010 FIS Marathon Cup.

Race officials and the FIS Technical Delegate will conduct the meeting and provide information on:

  • course conditions
  • weather forecast
  • race updates
  • uniforms/ski suits and clothing checked for FIS compliance


Coaches, Team Leaders and athletes without team affiliation are encouraged to attend the meeting and will have the opportunity to ask questions.
