I have a 3 bedroom home that sleeps 8, kids could camp out on floor for $700/night. Located in the city of Hayward. Clean and providing linens. Gas fireplace and full kitchen. Direct TV. Would be ideal for a couple of families! Very spacious and right in the city. Large 2 car attached garage to wax your skis! Close to the National Log Rolling off Hwy B. I do have a short haired cat that would not be there at the time but wanted to mention if you have allergies. Very modern 1400 sq. Foot log side Read More

I have already secured lodging in Barnes but am second guessing my decision to stay that far away from the race. Wondering if anybody knows of a place for my wife and I to stay for Th-SU morning. It would just be the 2 of us and would like to be closer to Cable if possible. Thanks.

I used to stay in Barnes during the Birkie a long time ago. The lodging I had there was free but it was a fair distance from the various events, especially those in Hayward. Try calling hotels in Hayward as they often have last minute cancellations.

Have any skate skiers ever developed shoulder problems? WIth this weird winter my training has consisted of periods of no skiing followed by 2-3 days straight of heavy skiing. After one of these periods my right shoulder is very sore, I suspect from poor form skiing up hills. It hurts to lift my arm up and to make circles with that arm. Anybody have any information on shoulder stretches and/or light strengthening exercises?

sam ·

I'm a family doctor and suspect you probably have rotator cuff tendonitis, an overuse injury of the shoulder. I have the same thing. I'd recommend you see your family doctor, since a few sessions of physical therapy may be helpful before you aggravate it further. Try ice after workouts, and Advil if no contraindications.

Any of you classic skiers using Rex PowerGrip for your kick wax - how do you like it?

James ·

I would also like to hear from skiers regarding kick wax. After about 25k at last year's Birkie, I lost any grip I had and attempts to re-wax were futile. Any help would be appreciated.

j ·

For a long ski, I iron in two layer of binder and then iron in one layer of the wax of the day. I cork about 10 thin layers of additional kick wax on top of that. Last year, my kick wax stayed with me the whole way.

I just was able to ski for the first time a week ago and realized I have two different poles. (The last time I skied before that was the Birkie.) I feel terrible that I took someone else's pole or perhaps they accidentally grabbed one of mine and one of theirs but in my cold, frost-bitten state my dad got them for me and I didn't notice until this year when I had two right handed poles! Does anyone know if it is possible to withdraw my registration from this year's event? I haven't been able to train any this year since there has been 0 snow :(

Ralph Thornton ·

I'm pretty sure there would be no refund. You can easily withdraw from the Birkie by not picking up your bib.

On the other hand the Birkie is such a fun event that you might consider changing to the Korteloppet. There's a fee for that but it can be done. You might also consider lowering your racing expectations. There will be many in the lower level of training group due to the lower amount of early season snowfall. Do the race as a tour, earn your medal or pin and plan for a better tra

Norm

Ralph Thornton ·

There is often Gu at many food stations but they might run out or not have the flavor you might want. Most folks I know carry there own Gu, Cliff Shots, etc.

Seems like the Heed had a faint Lemon Lime flavor. Flavor was not that strong though so for me it really didn't matter what flavor it was. I'm presuming all flavors of Heed have the same benefits.

I am looking forward to my first Birkie. I am a strong intermediate classic skier on track to becoming an emerging advanced skier. And I'm hoping that what I lack in advanced technical ability can be trumped by my enthusiasm and overall fitness level! Is doing the 54K classic with waxless skis akin to trying to play Wimbledon with a wood racquet? Would love some veteran adv Read More

Ralph Thornton ·

IMHO waxable skis that fit correctly are easier to ski on an provide faster glide than no-wax skis. To get the most out of them you will have to learn how to wax them correctly, however. Given that I would recommend that you consider an upgrade to your equipment.

Fred Boetcher ·

While classic skiing the Birkie I'm more concerned with bite than glide. That is because I have to haul my 200 lbs up all those hills. Unless you're in the 1st couple of classic waves, the track gets glazed about 8-10km along. It took longer this year because it was colder. For me, I get the best combination of bite and glide with waxable classics. I use ice klister covered with the hard wax of the day. When the hard wax wears off the ice klister bites those glazed tracks very well. Start grip t Read More

I'm wondering about using resistance bands as an alternative to buying roller skis, which I can't afford currently, for double pole training. Does anyone have any experience with this? I know that it wouldn't be a coordinated movement if done using fixed resistance bands (ie, attached to a door knob while I double or alternate single pole), but it seems it might be a good alternative way to increase pole endurance. Any comments?

Ryan ·

I use the jacketed resistance bands with handles from Lifeline U.S.A. I just use different bands for different exercises. The handles can be grasped in a similar way to a ski pole. A heavier band for double pole lock n'loads and a lighter one for single sticking and full range of motion double poling. This way I can to the double pole workout from the birkie training plan at home. I attach the bands to my chin up bar. I throw in some resistance band leg stuff ("Aerobic bands" Li Read More

does anyone know when they will come out with the wave seeding times for the 2012 birkie. I am quite curious! :-)-l-<=

Flo ·

To calculate the "basis" times, just take the average times of the first five finishers AFTER the Elite skiers. After that, just use the table on the Waves & Seeding page to do your own calculations.

or Processing…

Chris ·

Does anyone know what the official temperatures were at the start and at the finish?

Melissa ·

I think that it depends on which start and the finish time, but these are some numbers that I heard/saw: a newspaper article stated that the start for elites had a temperature of minus 10 F, which is 3 degrees warmer than the lowest allowable by FIS stardards; the same article stated that the temperature at the finish was 5 degrees F, I believe. A friend who seemed to somehow know the temperature said that the temp at the start of wave 6 was minus 5 F, and upon his arrival in Hayward 3:40 later Read More

Gregory Joseph ·

I am interested in the calculation for "% Back". This is used for determining wave placement.

Flo ·

Take a look at the "Waves & Seeding" page: the "basis" time the percentage-back figure is based on is calculated as follows:
It's the average time of the first 5 finishers AFTER the Elite skiers; so it was 1:58:10 in 2010 for Birkie skate.

Susan Kendrick ·

The American Birkebeiner will be posting an updated Percent Back Chart and the Wave and Seeding information in the next couple of weeks. You can visit this page for the updated information http://www.birkie.com/page/show/110367-waves-and-seeding
