Show off your vintage skis and clothes!

In 1973, the first year of the Birkie, cross country skiers were sporting the best athletic gear of the day — woolen knickers, wooden skis, and bamboo poles. In 1984, Bengt Hassis won the race in the early years of skating in low-top boots on “new” skating style skis, sporting a one-piece lycra suit. In 1993, a young Ben Popp raced in the a fashionable purple and teal suit, one in a sea of florescent clad racers. In 2018 you can show off your favorite vintage skis and clothing as part of the Nikkerbeiner. Re-live eras past and be a part of the opening of Birkie Week  by skiing this retro ski tour up Hayward’s Main Street.

The Courses

As part of the Opening Ceremonies of the American Birkebeiner, the Nikkerbeiner will start on Lake Hayward at the Hayward City Beach.  Everyone will ski over the International Bridge, up Main Street to the Birkie Finish Line.

Start Time: 11:15am on Thursday, February 22
