My Friendship with the Birkie began in 1986. I skied my first 10 races Classic style … then moved on to Skate for the next 10 … and returned to Classic technique with the advent of the new CL trail.

In the early days, reaching High Point was always the challenge and the great “Sigh of Relief.” My Birkie K marker there is a tribute to those pinnacles of success.

The CL 30K marker symbolizes that Gold bib received for skiing 30 Birkies … making each Birkie more Golden.

Beginning my early days of skiing in knickers and knee socks, to being introduced to the Telemark trails via a Milwaukee Nordic Ski Club bus trip and sleeping on the saggy mattresses of bunk beds in the Telemark Hostel, this all molded a pattern for pursuing my lifestyle of Nordic skiing.

Even being unable to ski “da Birkie” one year due to shoulder surgery, I did my own Birkie Marathon of volunteering 25 hrs during Birkie weekend. It was my time to “Give Back.”

I have found “Birkie Fever” … it is NOT curable !

The Birkie has become a Friend of mine … I am a Friend of the Birkie.
