Just one week from tomorrow, 500 bike riders from across the country will be putting rubber on some of the best snow anywhere at the second annual Fat Bike Birkie. Among them will be riders with some serious cred and riders entering their first race. In true Birkie style the field will be a diverse celebration of elite and citizen bikers alike. Now that the Fat Bike Birkie has been designated the U.S. National Fat Bike Championships, next Saturday will be a major fat-bike show on snow!
“I know that the Midwest is currently

the center of the universe for fat bikes.”
One rider, Ned “The Lung” Overend reserved his spot back in December. A household name in cycling, Overend is a World Mountain Bike Champion with list of accomplishments that spans decades. What’s bringing him from from Durango, Colorado, to ride the Birkie Trail on March 8? Here’s what he had to say about the event and riding fat bikes in general:

“This is my second winter riding fat bikes. I’ve done a few races on snow in Colorado, but the Birkie will be my first time racing in the Midwest. I live in Durango, Colorado, at 6500 feet and have always trained through the winter. Before Fat bikes I would ride my mountain bike on snow-packed hiking trails.

“I’ve done the Chequamegon mountain bike race and have done the American Birkebeiner ski race twice. I work for Specialized in product development and marketing and I’m part of the fat bike product team. I know that the Midwest is currently the center of the universe for fat bikes so I felt it was important to participate in the Birkie event and to come learn from the riders in the area.”
