National Championship Returns to the Birkie Trail
HAYWARD, Wisconsin – The field limit for the third annual Fat Bike Birkie on March 7, 2015, has been bumped up to 750 riders and is quickly filling. According to Ben Popp, Executive Director of the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation, the field is already a third full. “It’s going to fill up fast as the snow flies and people really start fat biking on snow again,” said Popp.
The 47-kilometer event will be, for the second year in a row be the “U.S. National Fat Bike Championships” with cash prizes for the top three women and men.
The inaugural Fat Bike Birkie in 2013 filled with 300 riders, and last year’s U.S. National Championship race maxed out the cap of 500 riders. According to Tom Kelly’s Birkie Fever book, these participation numbers are outpacing those of the first three American Birkebeiners in 1973, 1974, and 1975.“We want to grow with the race,” stated Popp. “We don’t want to rush it. We want to expand it in a way that keeps giving participants the best experience on the trail. It has to be a ton of fun!”
Popp hopes to add single-track sections to this year’s race, which has used the Birkie Trail exclusively for the first two races. The Birkie race and trail staff are reconnoitering the south end of the course near the Highway OO turnaround for the proposed single-track.
According to Popp, the weather was prefect for last year’s race—sunshine and temperatures climbing into the upper 20s. The packed trail was hard and fast. “You go on a great bike ride,” said Popp. “Then finish. Drink beer. Eat brats. What’s not to like?”
Last year, mountain bike legend Ned Overend won the Fat Bike Birkie, also claiming the win of the inaugural U.S. National Fat Bike Championship.
Freewheel Bike is again the Title Sponsor of Fat Bike Birkie, which is part of the Great Lake Fat Bike Series for the third straight year. Entry fee is $50 until Dec. 31, 2014.
