New Summer Programming for Youth and Adults Alike

Hayward, Wis. (May 9, 2016) – It isn’t everyone who is fortunate enough to live in the north woods with nature as their playground.  Fortunately, residents of Sawyer and Bayfield counties can count themselves amongst the lucky ones.  The American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation (ABSF), the “Birkie,” is eager to help residents get moving in the great outdoors.  In support of their mission to promote a healthy active lifestyle for all ages and abilities, the ABSF has announced two new summer programs for youth and adults alike.

If you or a family member is interested in experiencing the Birkie lifestyle, one of the programming options may give you just the taste you’re looking for this summer.

Birkie Trail Kids

girls mt bikingBirkie Trail Kids is a summer program designed to get kids out on the trail running, biking, orienteering, canoeing, and more.  The program will expose kids to different outdoor activities, increase their general physical development, and teach them the love of outdoor sport- all while having fun!  Birkie Trail Kids will be held two mornings a week from 9am to 10:30am for youth ages 7-13.  All levels of ability are encouraged to participate.   Coaches will lead the kids through exercises, games, and different activities on the Birkie Trail, as well as on other local trails.  Kids will be having so much fun they won’t even know they are exercising!  A mountain bike is beneficial, but not required for the program.  The Birkie Trail Kids kick-off meeting and registration will be held on May 22nd at 3:30 pm at Fish Hatchery Park just off of Highway 77.  More information and online registration can be found on the Birkie website.  Parents are encouraged to come to the kick-off meeting to see what kind of fun your child can have this summer!  The 12-week program registration fee is $80 per participant.

On the Trail to Fitness

BHH3186While the popular Be Healthy Hayward program, Presented by Essentia Health, will return later this summer, the Birkie is pleased to introduce On the Trail to Fitness, a program designed to get adults outside and active this summer.  On the Trail to Fitness will kick-off on May 23 with a run/walk program utilizing dirt trails and the Hayward City Bike Trail.  This is a great program for anyone interested in a basic fitness program or perhaps in training for their first 5K run/walk.  If you’ve considered running the Musky Run 5K/10K in June this summer, this program is perfect for you.  Or, if you’re interested in increasing your current training program with like-minded people or adding more fun exercise ideas to increase your fitness, On the Trail to Fitness is an ideal choice.  The program will meet Mondays at 5pm and Thursdays at 10am from May 23 to June 16.  The program is flexible, you can come to one or both sessions, whichever best suits your schedule.  Weekly emails offering exercise tips, healthy eating suggestions and recipes, will help keep you on track and get your summer off to a healthy start! The 4 week program registration fee is $25 per participant.

Both Birkie Trail Kids and On the Trail to Fitness are open to all, regardless of level of ability.  For additional information, email birkie@birkie.com or call the Birkie office at 715-634-5025 and press #5.
