Hayward, WI — The Hayward Lakes Visitors and Convention Bureau and the American Birkebeiner (The Birkie) have been named 2016 Champions of Economic Impact in Sports Tourism by Sports Destination Management, the leading publication with the largest circulation of sports event planners and tournament directors in the sports tourism market.

The call for nominations this year was a huge success. They learned about many prosperous partnerships between events and host destinations, and the Hayward/Cable area stood out as remarkable — not only for the economic impact generated from the partnership, but for other positive attributes such as driving tourism to a market sector, raising awareness of a sport and creating a positive influence on the host destination.

“Nominations exceeded expectations. We were overwhelmed by the volume and scope of entries — from team to individual, across all disciplines and all levels of play,” said publisher, Fonda Johnson. The most outstanding of those received were recognized and presented with event details in a special feature published in the November/December 2016 issue of Sports Destination Management. The entire article with full details on the winners listed below can also be found online along with a special feature on economic impact.
