About the Birchleggings Club
The Birchleggings Club was established in 1992 by John Kotar and the Birkie Founders. Their goal was to recognize and celebrate the achievements of skiers who completed 20 or more American Birkebeiner races, embodying the spirit and endurance of this iconic skiing event. The Founders sought to create an organization that would endure beyond their ski careers, one that would contribute to the enhancement of the rich traditions that make the Birkie a unique, globally renowned ski event. The Birchleggings Club is a non-profit that exists independently from the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation, although the two organizations work closely together to support each others’ missions.
As an incentive to skiers to continue participating in the American Birkegeiner and become “Birchleggers”, a range of exclusive benefits is extended through a collaboration between the Birchleggings Club and the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation:
- Commemorative award upon completing 20, 30, & 40 American Birkebeiner races as a testament to a skier’s commitment and achievement.
- A distinctive purple and gold bib is awarded to skiers participating in their 20th and subsequent races. Notably, for the 30-year participants, they receive a black and purple bib as a mark of their enduring commitment.
Whether you’re a seasoned Birkie veteran or a new aspirant working towards that coveted 20th race, the Birchleggings Club welcomes you to be a part of our enduring legacy. Join us in celebrating the spirit of the American Birkebeiner and the extraordinary journey of those who wear the distinctive purple bib with pride.
