There are no restrictions the specific tire size allowed. The Birkie groomers are some of the best in the world and have the goal of providing a firm surface to ride on for the races. However, we cannot control the weather and the course conditions can vary widely, from hard packed to soft powder. Just like in the Birkie Ski race, Fat Bike Birkie participants are free to choose different equipment based on the conditions of the course. We recommend that participants be prepared to race in any course condition, on a bike equipped with at least 3.5 inch wide tires.
No special equipment classes will be recognized in the Fat Bike Birkie results or awards
The Fat Bike Birkie Race Courses will be groomed and marked for pre-riding on Friday, March 10 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.
Please note that riding bikes on the Birkie Trail during the winter is only allowed on the days designated for the Fat Bike Birkie event. However, winter bike riding can be accessed from many of the trailheads utilizing the Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike Association trail system. Trail conditions can be found on the CAMBA Winter FAT BIKE page.
All long race participants must be at least 18 years of age on race day. All short race participants must be at least 13 years of age.
This event has a participant cap of 1200.

3.08.17: After repeated warm and rains this last week, the Birkie Trail that has been groomed all winter is now a HUGE sheet of ice. The trail crew has tried all means to renovate and scarify the surface, but we just don’t feel like we can create a race course that is safe for nearly 1200 riders…SO…we have searched out an alternate course and found one!! Ski trails adjacent to the Start/Finish venue have not been groomed all winter and are in much better shape- a combination of of grass, snow and small icy patches that are avoidable (and we can sand!). The race course will consist of an approx 9.4 km loop with an additional 1.8 km roll-out segment. The short race will be 2 laps for an estimated total of 21km, the long race 5 laps for 49km. More details and course updates coming soon.
Races will start and finish at the new American Birkebeiner Trailhead
km from Start
Check out the Trail Genius coverage of the 2015 FBB below – The 2017 race will feature a slightly different course, however these videos and maps give you a good idea about the trail and terrain.
The “Big Fat” Fat Bike Birkie will feature 4 start gates. Riders will be placed in one of these gates based on their finish time from the long race of the 2016 Fat Bike Birkie. Riders without a previous result will be assigned to Gate 4.
There will not be any gate assignments for the shorter Chico race.
Winners must be present at award ceremony to receive the cash prize.
Age-class Awards will be given to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place riders, male and female, in each age class for the Fat Bike Races.
