Covid-19 Policy
We have been very intentional and gradual in our approach to our COVID-19 health and safety protocols. Based on COVID-19 trends and regulatory guidance, the ABSF will continue to develop best practices for events, and these protocols may change at any time without notice. Our medical team is working closely with local health authorities and resources and will utilize CDC recommendations to determine necessary protocols to put in place for events in February.
We encourage all participants, spectators, and volunteers to get vaccinated.
Face Coverings
Face coverings are required (ages 2 and up) in all indoor locations, regardless of vaccination status. This includes Expo locations, bib pick-up, changing and warming tents, busses, Birkie Store retail spaces, etc. Face coverings are optional in outdoor areas.
All face coverings (whether disposable or reusable) should:
- Be made with at least 2 layers of breathable material
- Fully cover the nose and mouth
At this time, based on guidance from health authorities, open-chin, triangle bandanas and face coverings containing valves, mesh material or holes of any kind are not acceptable face coverings.
COVID-19 Warning
An inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 exists in any public place where people are present. COVID-19 is an extremely contagious disease that can lead to severe illness and death. According to the CDC, people with underlying medical conditions are especially vulnerable.
By participating in Birkie Ski Week, you voluntarily assume all risks related to exposure to COVID-19. Help keep each other healthy; we recommend being vaccinated and wearing a mask indoors.

FAQs
Will skiers be required to wear a mask at the start, finish, or on course?
At time of writing, the CDC does not recommend masks for outdoor use. We will be following the CDC guidelines and monitoring for changes in recommendations. We request that you ski with a mask on your person, in the case of an accident while on course.
Could Birkie Week Events be canceled due to COVID-19?
At this point in time, we feel that the proper precautions and monitoring are in place to allow Birkie Week Events to continue.
Our medical team is working closely with local health authorities and resources and will utilize CDC recommendations at the time to determine necessary protocols to put in place. Please check back here just before Birkie Week to determine if changes in protocols have been made.
If Covid-19 continues to rise, will you change Birkie events?
We will continue to monitor COVID-19 numbers daily, and the advice of the CDC and local health officials. We will adjust protocols based on their advice in February.
Will the expo and other indoor events happen as a normal Birkie year?
We monitor COVID-19 numbers daily and are in close contact with medical and health officials. At this time, we feel we can host the indoor spaces with mandatory masks in all indoor spaces. ABSF Wax Policy
The American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation has joined U.S. Ski and Snowboard in banning the use of fluorinated ski wax in competition beginning the 2020-2021 season. We encourage all competitors to abide by this policy for all events on the Birkie Trail and at the American Birkebeiner Trailhead. All athletes are subject to random ski testing at events and penalties will apply to any US Ski and Snowboard licensed or citizen skier that is found to be non-compliant.
