Birkie One Brings Cross-Country Skiing to Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe School
For the fourth consecutive year, Birkie One has brought its Learn to Ski program to students at the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe School—introducing dozens of young skiers to the joy of cross-country skiing. This year also marked an exciting milestone: the program’s first season utilizing Nordic Rocks skis, making the experience more accessible and seamless than ever before.
Over the course of two weeks in February 2026, a dedicated crew of American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation (ABSF) staff, board members, and community volunteers traveled to the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe School to work with 3rd–5th grade students. The ski sessions were integrated directly into the school’s physical education curriculum, transforming the athletic fields just outside the gym doors into a winter classroom.

Because the program took place on school grounds, there was no need for bussing or off-site travel—just a short trek outside to begin the adventure.
The introduction of Nordic Rocks skis streamlined the learning process. Designed to strap onto any winter boot, the skis eliminated the need to size and fit traditional ski boots. The result? Less time fussing with equipment and more time moving, playing, and building confidence on snow.
A total of 55 students participated in this year’s program. For many, it was their very first time on skis. What began with understandable hesitancy quickly transformed into smiles, laughter, and growing enthusiasm as students gained balance, coordination, and confidence.
“The positive impact we are having on these kids is very evident,” said program organizers. “Seeing their excitement grow over just a few sessions is incredibly rewarding.”
One student captured the spirit of the experience perfectly, proudly sharing, “My dad would be really proud of me right now!”
Through Birkie One, the ABSF continues its commitment to expanding access to outdoor recreation, promoting healthy lifestyles, and creating meaningful connections to winter sport within the community. As the program enters its fourth year—and with the addition of Nordic Rocks skis—it continues to remove barriers and open doors for the next generation of skiers.
