ABSF Board Candidate: Kate Constalie
Hometown:
Madison, WI
Years of ABSF Membership:
2-4? I’m honestly not sure! I am a current active member
Occupation:
Deputy Executive Director
Why are you interested in being a member of the ABSF Board of Directors?
My name is Kate Constalie and I would like to express my interest in becoming a Board Member with the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation. I am very much aligned with the goals and mission of the organization and I’d love to use my skills and experience to further promote Wisconsin’s greatest winter outdoor competition.
Thanks to my family’s multi-generational cabin in the Hayward area, the American Birkebeiner has been a pillar of tradition throughout my family’s history. My late grandpa, Fred Constalie, had the honor and privilege of skiing the first Birkebeiner in 1973. That same year, my grandma and father, who was 9 at the time, skied the first Kortelopet. I grew up hearing stories of the races that went well, the races that ended with broken skis and the blueberry soup and doughnuts that were served along the way. My grandpa was my inspiration to become a skier, and it has been an honor for me to further our rich family tradition by competing in this iconic race. The American Birkebeiner has provided my family generations of memories and experiences and I would relish the opportunity to serve the organization that has given us so much.
What knowledge and skills do you possess that can benefit the organization?
Professionally, I have served as a Communications Director for a Wisconsin State Senator, Legislative Liaison for the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation and now my current role as Deputy Executive Director for the Democratic Party of Wisconsin. My ability to engage with a wide variety of stakeholders, including constituents, local businesses, community leaders, business executives, the press corps and our state’s political leaders will translate well within ABSF Board. My career thus far has provided me with a solid foundation in understanding the complexities of state government, navigating the political landscape, and the capability to recognize strategic directions that could benefit the growth and promotion of ABSF. I enjoy using my friendly, positive and collaborative personality to build and maintain relationships and will put my network, experience and enthusiasm to work to further the goals and mission of the ABSF Board.
How do you see yourself helping to fulfill the ABSF vision, mission and values?
I foresee myself using the knowledge and contacts I’ve gained throughout my career to help the ABSF Board form state and community partnerships to increase awareness of the race. I will bring a unique perspective to help guide and inform the ABSF Board in its efforts to attract and serve the next generation of Birkie skiers and outdoor enthusiasts.
The American Birkebeiner has left a lasting impression on me since my younger days, when I would watch the race’s finish in downtown Hayward from atop my grandpa’s shoulders. As I’ve assumed the mantle of participation in this event, I have been overwhelmed by the sense of camaraderie that is felt on the trail. I would be thrilled to serve on behalf of this organization which creates and promotes such a strong community for this wonderful winter sport.
