Mt. Telemark Land Conservancy
ABSF Land Conservancy to Protect 286 Acres of Telemark Forest
The ABSF has put the largest section, 286 acres, of the Telemark property into a permanent land conservancy. The Mt. Telemark Conservancy provides a forever home to ski and mountain bike trails and an opportunity for all to enjoy into the future.
The rolling hills of the Telemark Conservancy were formed 15,000 years ago when the Laurentide glacier receded from northern Wisconsin. The resulting terrain is what makes trails and recreation in this Conservancy special. The Conservancy provides a scenic woodland corridor for the American Birkebeiner Trail and contributes to the north woods experience that draws people to northern Wisconsin. The North Central Forest type, limited to portions of fourteen counties in northern Wisconsin, comprises red oak, eastern white pine, and red pine mixed with basswood and maple.
In addition to placing 286 ABSF owned property into conservancy, the ABSF also sold 218 acres to Landmark Conservancy. They placed these acres into a conservancy they own and manage. The Landmark Conservancy is a nationally accredited, non-profit land trust whose mission is to conserve Wisconsin’s natural legacy for everyone, forever. Landmark has a 30+ year history and works in 20 counties with offices in Menomonie and Bayfield. Formed through the merger of West Wisconsin Land Trust and Bayfield Regional Conservancy, and recently the Couderay Waters Regional Land Trust, the Landmark Conservancy protects land with strong natural resource features primarily through conservation easements with private landowners. A conservation easement limits the uses on the land, particularly related to development.
