The Campaign for Sustainable Telemark
Part II: The Vision for Mt. Telemark Village

Overall Concept Plan

You’ve learned about the land and the trails; now let’s take a look at Mt. Telemark Village and the recreation opportunities and facilities that are part of the vision.

Let’s start with the simplest: sledding and ice skating. Telemark has the infrastructure in place for these kids and kids-at-heart activities that get the heart pumping, the legs moving, and bring smiles to faces. Near the skating pond will be a Festival Plaza, picnic area, and playground.

If you’ve been wondering about the two concrete walls left standing when Telemark Lodge was razed, those walls will frame the Plaza. On the Plaza will be an outdoor fireplace built with the stones from the Lodge’s fireplace; we’ll reuse the fireplace lintel, too. Toast a few marshmallows in the fireplace, and take a hike up Mt. Telemark to enjoy the view from the lookout tower.

The Hub? It’s a collection of buildings in the conceptual stages, but is sure to include a Nordic Center – an indoor gathering place for every season. Check back to this site to learn how the plans are taking shape. You’ll see on the plan “Lodging,” “Camping Cabins,” and “Pool,” and those facilities will be developed by commercial partners who will purchase a small amount of acreage from the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation.

Mt. Telemark Village is a place for people of all ages and abilities and from all backgrounds to enjoy being outside and active together. Bring your friends, come with your family, and make new friends and memories at Mt. Telemark Village.

Why Telemark Now?

The mission of the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation is to promote and conduct the finest international cross country ski competition; to serve as good stewards of the American Birkebeiner Trail; and to support healthy and active lifestyles among people of all ages and abilities. We also acquire land for conservation purposes to help us fulfil our mission.

Mt. Telemark Village will allow us to reach more people and get them outdoors with new activities. Whether a competitive athlete, the casual skier, a trail runner, a child climbing a snowy hill to ride a saucer sled to the bottom, or a family learning how to mountain bike together, the Village will bring people together in the outdoors. This is our mission, and Telemark is our legacy and future.
